The residents make a number of suggestions to try and reduce vehicle speeds, with several suggesting the installation of a speed camera. Transport for London (TfL) manage and maintain safety cameras and these have historically only been deployed when there have been four people either killed or seriously injured over a three-year period, where speed was a contributory factor in at least two of the collisions.

TfL is currently upgrading older style cameras with new digital units and, due to this ongoing programme, no new safety camera sites are currently being considered for installation. Once the safety camera replacement programme has been complete, TfL will be identifying suitable locations for new safety cameras by employing a risk-based approach that prioritises higher risk locations, rather than solely targeting sites that have experienced historic casualty trends. However, although TfL are yet to confirm details of their new evaluation criteria, it is unlikely that Old Park Ridings would be seen as a priority location.

Safety cameras are only one of the ways to tackle speed related deaths and serious injuries on our roads. TfL and the London Boroughs work in partnership with the Metropolitan Police to undertake many other speed management initiatives, including Community Road Watch. Community Road Watch aims to reduce speeding in residential areas and gives local residents the opportunity to work side by side with their local police teams, and use speed detection equipment to identify speeding vehicles in their communities. We have been in contact with the Police and they have agreed to undertake a Community Road Watch operation in Old Park Ridings in the near future.

We have also commissioned a new survey of traffic speeds in Old Park Ridings and will carry out some further in-depth analysis to see if a treatable pattern of collisions emerges that engineering measures can address within available budgets.
