Enfield Council is one of the constituent local authorities that form the North London Waste Authority (NLWA) which is planning to rebuild the Edmonton incinerator. This new plant will be even larger than at present and cost £1.2 billion, a public loan which will have to be repaid by us, council tax payers. Most importantly – releasing vast quantities of green house gases and dangerous toxic substances is incompatible with the urgent push to decarbonise our economy and reduce pollution.
According to the NLWA, the new incinerator will burn 700,000 tonnes of rubbish yearly. This means that it will be releasing 700,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere every year for the next 50 years. (the International Panel on Climate Change says that 1 tonne of burnt waste releases approximately 1 tonne of CO2). This is incompatible with the Climate Emergency Declaration by Enfield Council and its commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030. The indiscriminate burning of plastics, metals, etc. also results in the release of pollutants, such as dioxins and particulates, recognized to cause severe damage to our health. This is of grave concern to many residents in Enfield because the polluting substances are carried by wind to residential areas, schools, streets and gardens in Edmonton, Palmers Green and Bowes, as well as neighbouring areas such as Waltham Forest and Chingford.
